Cambodia

Cambodia

As Cambodia continues to grow, so does its connection to the world. These days there are numerous places you can go to use your own laptop to connect to the internet. Not just in coffee shops but in fast food restaurants, bars, and even gas stations.

  • Currency: Cambodian Riel KHR
The Cambodian riel is the official currency, but US dollars are universally accepted in Cambodia. Most ATMs dispense US dollars instead of riels. While there are sufficient ATMs in the major tourist areas of Sihanoukville, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh which dispense US$ it may be wise to bring your own supply of US$1, $5, $10 and $20 bills to avoid problems changing larger denominations of $50 or $100 notes.
.
Cambodian riels are used instead of US coins, at a fixed rate of 4000 riel/dollar for calculation convenience. So USD 1,50 is one dollar plus 2000 riel. There are also 20000 riel bills (5 USD), but higher amounts are usually paid in dollars.
.
ATMs can be found in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, and Kampot; both debit card withdrawls (Maestro, Cirrus, Plus, VISA) and cash advances on credit cards are possible. For the rest of the country it's best to stick to cash or traveller's checks (in US$).

Laos

Laos

Internet cafés can be found in larger towns, however access speeds are usually painfully slow. The most reliable connections are in Vientiane. In many normal cafés they offer free WiFi-access for customers. GPRS via mobile phone is also an option, especially if you have a local or Thai SIM.

  • Currency: Laos Kip LAK
The Lao currency is the kip, which is non-convertible (outside Laos), unstable and generally inflationary. As of Feb 2011, there are around 10,000 kip to the euro and 8000 kip to the US dollar. Make sure that you get rid of all your kip before you leave the country (unless keeping a handful as a souvenir), since there will be no possibility to exchange it in other countries. The Vientiane airport for example will exchange your kip into dollars.
.
The largest note is only 50000 kip, the other notes in common circulation are 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000 and 20000 kip; withdrawing the maximum of 700,000 kip from an ATM (about US$70) could result in 70 notes of 10000 kip each.
.
There are now quite a few ATMs in Vientiane, and they have also appeared in other major cities including Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Savannekhet, Tha Khaek, Pakse and Luang Namtha.

Vietnam

Vietnam

Internet access is available in all but the most remote towns. Internet cafes are available in most tourist spots. Connection speeds are high, especially in the big cities. Many hotels and restaurants provide free Wi-Fi or terminals for their guests. If you bring your own phone and/or laptop, several providers offer mobile internet services (EDGE/3G) services as well.

  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong VND
The national currency is the dong (đồng, VND), which is difficult to find or exchange outside Vietnam; change money on arrival and try to get rid of any leftovers before leaving the country. Bills are available in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000, 200000 and 500000 dong. In 2003, coins were also introduced in denominations of 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 dong, although these are rarely seen.
.
ATMs are getting more and more common and can be found in most bigger cities and every tourist destination. They will accept a selection of credit and bank-cards, including Visa, Mastercard, Maestro or Cirrus and several other systems. Not every machine will like your particular card, but "Vietcombank-ATMs" are known for the broadest variety.
